LA JOLLA Q&A

THE JEWEL,
EXPLAINED.

A few useful answers about the coast, its history and the place behind our name.

WHY IS LA JOLLA CALLED “THE JEWEL”?

“The Jewel” is La Jolla’s enduring nickname, but the place-name’s origin is not perfectly settled. Historical studies point to earlier spellings such as La Hoya, while an 1870 map used La Joya—Spanish for “the jewel.” Our coffee celebrates the nickname without pretending the etymology is simple.

WHAT MAKES THE WATER OFF LA JOLLA DIFFERENT?

Below the surface are kelp beds, rocky reefs, sandy flats and submarine canyon habitat. The city-established underwater park dates to 1971 and stretches from La Jolla Cove toward Torrey Pines.

WHY DOES SCRIPPS OCEANOGRAPHY BELONG IN THE STORY?

The institution’s roots reach back to a marine biology association formed in 1903. By 1907 its permanent station was in La Jolla, supported in large part by Ellen Browning Scripps and E.W. Scripps.

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THE TORREY PINE?

California State Parks calls it the nation’s rarest pine. Its natural range is limited to the Torrey Pines area and Santa Rosa Island, where salt, wind and dry coastal conditions shape its distinctive form.
